Climate Resilience Begins with People, Not Projects
Over the years, I have worked closely with communities. Climate change is not a future concern, it is part of everyday life. A delayed monsoon, a drying well, a failed crop or a shrinking forest. All these are very fast disrupting daily livelihoods, education, nutrition and health.
These experiences have reinforced one belief: climate resilience cannot be achieved by restoring nature alone. It becomes meaningful only when water security, sustainable livelihoods and healthy ecosystems are strengthened together.
For me, climate resilience is measured by whether families can remain on their land with dignity, confidence and hope despite a changing climate.
Why the Last Mile Deserves Our First Attention
The communities that contribute the least to global emissions are often the first to experience the harshest climate impacts. Rural villages, tribal regions, coastal settlements and drought-prone landscapes face increasing uncertainty. It is intensifying from erratic rainfall, declining groundwater, biodiversity loss and extreme weather events.
That is why last-mile climate resilience deserves to be at the centre of every CSR strategy. And that alongwith climate adaptation plans and sustainable development programmes. Real impact begins where vulnerability is highest and where community-led action can create lasting transformation.
My Three-Pillar Framework for Climate Resilience
Through my work, I have come to see climate resilience through three inseparable pillars. When these three pillars work together, resilience becomes self-sustaining rather than project-dependent.
- Water secures life. Without reliable water, agriculture, health, sanitation and local economies cannot thrive.
- Livelihood secures dignity. Sustainable income opportunities reduce migration, improve food security and enable families to invest in their future.
- Ecology secures tomorrow. Healthy forests, wetlands, rivers, biodiversity and soils protect communities while strengthening nature’s ability to recover from climate shocks.
Water Is the Starting Point of Every Resilient Community
Every successful climate adaptation journey I have witnessed begins with water. Communities that restore watersheds, harvest rainwater, recharge groundwater and protect local water bodies are better prepared for both droughts and floods.
This is particularly important in India, where government estimates indicate that nearly 600 million people experience high to extreme water stress, making water security one of the country’s most urgent development priorities.
Yet water conservation is never only about storing water. It creates opportunities for better agriculture, healthier ecosystems, stronger rural livelihoods and greater community resilience.
Climate Action Must Create Livelihood Security
One lesson has consistently shaped my work: people cannot be expected to protect natural resources if their own livelihoods remain uncertain.
Effective climate action, therefore, must generate economic opportunity alongside environmental restoration. Climate-smart agriculture, agroforestry, watershed management, women’s self-help groups, regenerative farming and local enterprises – All these in my experience must contribute to resilient rural economies while strengthening ecosystems.
A compelling example comes from Rajasamadhiyala village in Gujarat, where integrated watershed management transformed both livelihoods and the local environment. Rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge improved water availability, enabling farmers to diversify into higher-value crops such as cumin, vegetables, and fruit orchards. Crop productivity increased, cropping intensity rose by nearly one-third, and improvements extended beyond agriculture to food security, fodder availability, literacy, and overall community well-being. The initiative demonstrated that restoring water resources can simultaneously strengthen livelihoods and ecological resilience.
Communities Must Lead Climate Resilience
One principle has guided me throughout my journey: communities should never be viewed as beneficiaries. They are partners, innovators and long-term custodians of resilience.
The most successful climate initiatives I have witnessed are those where local people shape solutions from the beginning.
Odisha offers a compelling example of why communities must lead climate resilience. Through Mission Shakti and the Odisha Livelihoods Mission, millions of women in Self-Help Groups have strengthened livelihoods. Have done it via natural resource management and local governance, proving that resilient communities are built through participation rather than dependency.
More recently, the Jal Sanchay, Jan Bhagidari initiative has demonstrated how community-led rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge can improve long-term water security across districts. These initiatives reaffirm my belief that when communities own solutions, climate resilience becomes sustainable and scalable.
Technology Should Empower, Not Replace, Local Knowledge
Technology has become an important enabler of climate resilience, but it should always strengthen community decision-making rather than replace it.
Today, satellite imagery, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, artificial intelligence, weather forecasting, groundwater mapping and digital monitoring platforms help identify climate risks with greater precision. These innovations improve watershed planning, support climate-smart agriculture, strengthen disaster preparedness and enable better monitoring of ecosystem restoration.
However, I believe technology delivers its greatest value only when it is combined with local experience, traditional knowledge and inclusive governance. Sustainable climate action is built on the partnership between innovation and people.

CSR Can Become India’s Strongest Climate Accelerator
I believe CSR delivers its greatest impact when it strengthens water security, sustainable livelihoods, and ecosystem restoration together.
The Aditya Birla Group demonstrates this through its integrated community development model. Here watershed management, model villages, agriculture and livelihood programmes are implemented as one ecosystem. Across its initiatives, the Group has developed water structures, strengthened irrigation, promoted sustainable livelihoods and transformed villages into more resilient communities. A stark example of how integrated CSR can create lasting climate resilience instead of short-term impact.
India’s Companies Act mandates CSR spending for eligible companies, creating one of the world’s largest corporate-led development ecosystems. When these investments align with water security, ecosystem restoration, sustainable livelihoods, climate adaptation and community resilience, they generate long-term environmental, social and economic value simultaneously.
Climate Resilience Is Also a Development Strategy
Too often, climate resilience is discussed only through the lens of environmental conservation.
I see it differently.
Climate resilience strengthens agriculture, protects food security, improves public health, supports education, creates employment, conserves biodiversity, reduces disaster risks and strengthens local economies. It directly contributes to multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those relating to clean water, climate action, life on land, decent work, poverty reduction and sustainable communities.
In other words, climate resilience is not a parallel development agenda—it is the foundation upon which inclusive and sustainable development depends.
A Call to Build the Future Together
As I reflect on the communities I have worked with, one truth stands above all else:
Resilience is built through trust, collaboration and an unwavering commitment to people and nature together.
My vision for India’s future is one where every climate initiative asks three simple questions:
- Will it improve water security?
- How will it strengthen livelihoods?
- Will it restore ecosystems for future generations?
